Kingscliff High School - Sports Excellence

AFL

Targeted Sports Program

The program

Built for aspiring athletes

The Targeted Sports Program – Australian Football is designed to contribute to the development of 20 identified aspiring athletes in AFL. The program caters to both current and aspiring players, giving current players the opportunity to further develop and strengthen their skills, while allowing students with little to no experience to learn and develop their knowledge and skills in a safe, fun environment. The aim is to empower every individual to perform at their highest potential, regardless of experience level.

To support these athletes, TSP–AFL players take part in a program built around four commitments:

Weekly training

Sport-specific training every Tuesday, integrated into timetabled lessons, and Wednesday during internal school sport, developing fundamental skills, knowledge and fitness.

If the timetable does not allow the Tuesday session, a morning session takes place instead.

Competition opportunities

A variety of opportunities to compete and represent KHS in their chosen sport. See Competitions below.

Expert coaching

Access to high-quality coaching and development opportunities through affiliated and complementary sporting bodies.

Athlete knowledge

Personal development of the training and health knowledge that builds successful athletes.

Competitions

Where our athletes compete

TSP–AFL athletes at Kingscliff High School have access to a range of school and representative AFL opportunities.

StreetSmarts AFLQ Schools Cup

AFL Queensland's premier schools' Australian Football competition, providing students with the opportunity to represent their school and compete against schools from across Queensland and the Northern Rivers of New South Wales.

The competition caters for public, private and independent schools. Divisions include Junior Boys, Years 7 to 9, with 18 players and 7 interchange; Senior Boys, Years 10 to 12, with 18 players and 7 interchange; Junior Girls, Years 7 to 9, with 16 players and 6 interchange; and Senior Girls, Years 10 to 12, with 16 players and 6 interchange.

Teams progress through regional Gala Days and qualifying competitions, with the pathway culminating in the AFLQ Schools Cup State Finals.

NSWCHSSA Australian Football State-wide Competition, 16 Years and Under
Provides schools with the opportunity to compete against other NSW public schools. Regional competitions feed into a state-wide finals series each September.
Talented Pathway, Under 14 Boys and Girls

Athletes can access FNC and NC trials, and potentially progress to NSW Combined High Schools selection, before potentially representing NSW All Schools and progressing to the School Sport Australia Australian Football Championships.

This pathway provides our athletes with opportunities to compete at increasingly higher levels while developing their skills, experience and understanding of the game.
