The Year 7 Extension Class will focus on the intellectual and creative High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) domains.

What is the Year 7 Extension Class?

The Kingscliff High School extension class delivers high quality learning opportunities that nurture the talent of high potential and gifted students across the domains of potential: creative and intellectual. Student selection utilises the NSW Department of Education High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) Policy in the domains of creative and intellectual.

Who can apply?

All Year 6 students are invited to apply for entry into our Year 7 Extension Class.

· A second information session will be held at the Kingscliff High School on Monday, 4 May 2026 (Term 2, Week 3).

· Applications are be submitted online via the “2027 Kingscliff HS Year 7 Extension Class - Expression of Interest (EOI)”. The link can also be found below.

What is the selection procedure?

There are four steps in the application/selection procedure:

1. Complete the “2027 Kingscliff HS Year 7 Extension Class - Expression of Interest (EOI)” before 4pm Friday, 22 May 2026 (Term 2, Week 5).

2. Students must complete a selection assessment held at Kingscliff High School at 6:00pm on Wednesday, 3 June 2026. (Term 2, Week 7).

3. Students will attend an interview on Thursday, 4 June 2026 or Friday, 5 June 2026 (Term 2, Week 7).

4. Primary School information will be also collected.

Please note that providing documentation will strengthen the expression of interest and will help the high school to learn more about the student’s interests, passions, potential and achievements.

 Supporting Documentation

Supporting documentation  is to include  the following:

· two most recent school reports

· most recent NAPLAN report

Other supporting documentation can include:

· examples that demonstrate the student's interests, passions and signs of high potential in the creative and/or intellectual domains

· certificates or other documents showing participation/interest/achievement, including those received following competitions, challenges, community events and other initiatives

Supporting documentation is to be provided by Friday 5 June 2026 in one or more of the following ways:

· dropping into the high school office

· providing to staff at the Selection Assessments evening (Wednesday 3 June 2026, starting at 6pm)

· providing to staff at the Student Interview (Thursday 4 June 2026 and Friday 5 June 2026)

· emailing the school (kingscliff-h.school@det.nsw.edu.au)

Expectations of students in the Year 7 Extension Class

As a member of the Extension Class, it is expected that students will:

● Exemplify Kingscliff High School’s STAR student expectations

● Endeavour to do their best at all times

● Demonstrate exemplary behaviour

● Complete all assessments and class work

● Demonstrate executive functioning skills such as organization, time management, and willingness to collaborate

● Maintain high standards of attendance

Year 7 Extension Class Assessment

The selection assessment is completed at Kingscliff High School. Students complete 4 tests of 15 minutes each in the following areas:

1. Literacy – Reading and Comprehension: students will be given a written article and answer questions to assess understanding.

2. Literacy – Writing: students will be asked to write an extended written composition in response to stimulus material.

3. Numeracy: students will be expected to complete questions at the Stage 3/4 Mathematics level.

4. Creative and Critical Thinking: students will be asked to answer questions designed to assess their creative and critical thinking skills.

The Interview

● Instructions will be distributed to applicants by email by Wednesday 27 May 2026 (Term 2, Week 6).

● Students are asked to bring two pieces of work with them to discuss how these works demonstrate their achievement and capacity as an engaged and independent learner.

● Each interview will be approximately 15 minutes long. The student will be asked a series of questions related to their individual learning processes, including the High Potential and Gifted Domains (creative, intellectual, physical and social-emotional) and their motivation for applying for the Extension Class.

Information from the Primary Schools

The information collected from the Primary Schools may include:

● Student literacy and numeracy levels, including Year 5 NAPLAN results

● The Yearly report from Year 5 and the Half Yearly report from Year 6

● Student profile information on levels of the HPGE domains, maturity, cooperation and diligence

● A recommendation / reference from the Principal (or their delegate)

When will I know if my application has been successful?

Successful applicants will be contacted by email before Friday, 3 July 2026 (Term 2, Week 11).
