Device Checklist

Years 7, 8, 9 and 10

What device (iPad) should you be looking for?

Depends on your child's year group and how long they want to use it but needs to have the capability to support the latest IOS and a stylus pen.

Our recommended model iPad is the 9th Generation which was released in September 2021, the base 64gb model is a perfectly suitable device, but higher powered options with more storage are also available.

  • Years 7 – 10 Minimum iPad 8th generation or newer.
  • Can be an iPad 8th generation or newer, iPad Air 3rd Generation or newer or iPad Pro 3rd Generation or newer.
  • iPad mini is not suitable.
  • Needs to be Wi-Fi only (if iPad has sim card function, the sim card must be removed and placed in yondr pouch while at school as per KHS digital device policy)
  • Some older devices have 32 gb storage and that will suffice but for any subjects that involve any kind of multimedia, 64 gb or higher would be preferred.
  • Keep in mind the battery life on older devices like the 7th Gen iPad will be not as good as a newer device.

Where can you buy the correct device (iPad)?

  • We have an online education purchasing portal partnership with JB Hi-Fi with great education discounts, you can either pick-up in store or get the device delivered. Visit their site and enter code

KINGSCLIFFHSBYOD2024

  • All devices available on the purchasing portal meet our requirements.
  • Required keyboard cases are available, along with optional add-ons like the Apple pencil and Apple care.
  • Our recommendation is to purchase the 4 options listed here

  • iPads are also available direct from Apple. If you see a better price advertised publicly you can call Apple and they will price match.
  • Any other retailer

What accessories do I need?

  • A physical Keyboard is required. A rugged protective case that has a keyboard that we are recommending is this case for students. It has strong protection for the screen, can stow a stylus and has a sturdy and resistant keyboard, Other suitable keyboard cases are also available in the online purchasing portal.

  • Headphones or earphones are required, they can be wired or wireless.

What accessories are recommended?

  • Screen protector
  • Applecare+ service and support
  • A stylus – Apple Pencil (or Logitech Crayon) is also highly recommended.

Now that every iPad on-sale supports a smart stylus option, it's pretty natural for people to want to grab one, whether you're looking to draw, to take written notes, or you want a precision instrument for photo editing. Research also indicates using a stylus supports students to maintain their handwriting skills and retain more information.

Years 11 to 12

A device is currently still optional for years 10 to 12. A 9th generation iPad described above for years 7, 8, 9 and 10 would still be suitable for students in later years. Some students may already have a different device they prefer to use.

The BYOD program is new, but your device doesn't have to be.

If you have an existing device and it meets the minimum specification requirements then you are welcome to use it at school. In some cases, your existing device may only need the addition of a new USB WiFi adapter to make it compatible on the school network!

If you do require the purchase of a new device it is recommended that you have a copy of the minimum requirements on hand as different operating systems and device types have different capabilities. There are some base features that are mandatory for all devices, each operating system and form has separate requirements to make the device capable for learning activities.

Please be advised that mobile phones, iPods and tablets with a display smaller than 9.7″ are not appropriate as a primary devices for BYOD.

BYOD at Kingscliff High School is currently still optional and not mandatory for years 10 to 12

Display should be no larger than 13.3" as this has an adverse affect on weight and battery life. Ideal size is 11".

Weight (recommendation)

Aim for a device UNDER 1.5-2kg, or a weight you are comfortable carrying around each day. Remember you will be carrying this and potentially some books in your bag each day.

Physical Keyboard

Device must have a physical keyboard for data entry with separate keys for A-Z and 0-9 and which physically move when depressed.

Battery Life

Minimum 6 hours

Device is expected to be charged at home each night, facilities will not be available to charge the device at school.

 Other Considerations

  • System life expectancy is 4 years (not including physical damage/wear and tear). Meaning that students entering year 7 can utilise an iPad, but may require a new device entering senior years.
  • Depending on senior electives, a year 7 device could be used until graduation. Purchasing a solid, robust device will assist in the device's survival.
  • Students entering years 11-12 need to consider their electives and the software requirements when selecting a device for school.
  • Extended warranties are often available, and insurance for your device can also be found and applied when purchasing a new device. Check all the terms and conditions to ensure what is included/covered and always make a decision based on your personal circumstances.
  • All students have unlimited online storage in Office Onedrive and Google Drive, using this is recommended instead of storing all documents on their personal laptop which could be lost.

Accessories

  • Specialised backpack: with Laptop/Tablet compartment for added protection.
  • Carry Case: A protective case to house the device is highly recommended.
  • Tablet case with integrated keyboard.
